UK to Launch 20 New Local TV Channels by 2015
The UK Secretary of State has announced a new framework for the launch of local TV stations. 65 towns and cities — including Birmingham, Manchester and Newcastle — could potentially be offering new local television services in the UK with the first licenses being awarded as early as next year.
The initial stage will see Ofcom awarding licenses to local TV stations for broadcasting content on Freeview while the second stage will focus on supporting the transition to IPTV, especially for towns that lack good spectrum coverage, through the launch of superfast Broadband and content delivery platforms like YouView.
Ofcom will choose local licensees through a competitive selection process that aims to have 10 to 20 local TV stations operating by 2015.
