OTT Video Services Negative Impact on U.S. pay-TV

The number of pay-TV subscribers in the U.S. fell by nearly 348,000 between April and June of this year, according to IHS iSuppli, which attributes the drop to weakening economic conditions and stronger competition from over-the-top (OTT) players like Netflix.

The research firm estimates that there were 100.9 million pay-TV subscribers in America by the end of the second quarter of this year.

“Consumers are spending an increasing amount of time using Netflix at the expense of traditional services like cable and satellite, which may lessen the incentive to retain a pay-TV subscription,” said Erik Brannon, analyst at IHS.
