The Mobile Payments Market will Reach $2 Trillion by 2017
Mobile payments, performed via a device such as a smartphone, is clearly a fast growing sector of the global communications and retail-related marketplace.

Exploring New Applications for Mobile Phone SIM Cards
Mobile phone subscriber identification module (SIM) card annual shipments are expected to rise in 2013 by 5 percent to 5.5 billion units, according to the latest market study by ABI Research.
Growth is slowing as markets near saturation and the SIM card becomes increasingly ubiquitous across different mobile network technologies.
ABI believes that 4G mobile network rollouts, Near Field Communications (NFC) and solutions offering more advanced security for payments — such as DRM, authentication, and encryption — will all see higher end SIM cards shipping over the next few years.
Seeding the Global Market for Mobile NFC Apps
It’s now forecast that a total of 1.95 billion near field communication NFC enabled devices will ship in 2017 — a combination of both mobile handsets and consumer electronics CE Devices — according to the latest market study by ABI Research.
The majority of NFC enablement will continue to be focused in the mobile handset market, although ABI says that they are expecting a surge of NFC functionality included within CE products — for simple pairing of devices, exchange of data, and online authentication functionality.
In total, 395 million CE devices will ship in 2017, predominantly into media tablets, PC accessories, and gaming consoles.
Near Field Communication and Mobile Payment Challenges
Recently, IDATE has published its report which presents the current situation of the mobile payment and mobile NFC technology markets.
It analyzes the prospects for the market from a technical and economic point of view, by looking at challenges facing the economic models in key areas, including: automation, commerce, advertising, public services and transport.
“One of the major problems for NFC on mobile devices is how to define viable business models for a particular type of application in which the different stakeholders can find some level of financial balance”, comments Julien Gaudemer.
