Discover the Best American Cities for High-Tech Jobs

One in every five jobs in the U.S. required a high level of knowledge in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) as of 2011. Since the industrial revolution, the share of these kinds of jobs in the U.S. workforce has roughly doubled.

The Brookings Institution recently released “The Hidden STEM Economy,” a report that reviews the concentration of jobs that require technical knowledge.

How Low Internet Adoption in Thailand Limits Digital Marketing

Ad spending in Thailand is still firmly directed toward offline formats. According to the DAA Thailand — between 2011 and 2012, digital budgets grew their share of total ad spend in the country by only 0.4 percentage points to a still-meager 2.3%.

Limited internet penetration in Thailand is likely holding back spending on digital, among other factors. According to the ITU, in 2012 26.5% of the Thai population accessed the internet.

Study Explores the Economic Pulse of the World Today

The World at a Glance
According to the results of a global study by Ipsos, two regions of the world now show noteworthy improvements: Europe (+8 to 32%) and North America (+3 to 48%).
  • In Europe, much of the improvement is driven by the addition of Norway but Great Britain is also showing an eight point improvement to 21%, an important uptick for the country and region.
  • In North America, Canada rebounds to 63% (up 3 points) after last month’s dip while the United States continues its upward momentum (33%, +2 pts).

In the knowledge age, “smart” cities and metros have a considerable economic advantage. Economists have shown how urban and regional economic growth turn on education levels or so-called “human capital” achievement. The map above shows the pattern for metros.

The top smart cities are Ithaca, New York; State College, Pennsylvania; Lafayette, Indiana; Iowa City, Iowa; and Ames, Iowa.

B2C Ecommerce in Emerging Markets is Growing Rapidly

Asia-Pacific will contribute the most new dollars to business-to-consumer (B2C) ecommerce sales in coming years, according to eMarketer’s forecast of digital sales of retail and travel products and services.

This year alone, B2C ecommerce sales are expected to grow 23% in the region, with sales in China and Indonesia growing particularly fast, up 65% and 71%, respectively.

Nearly 10 percent of the U.S. population – nearly 21 million adults – suffer from a mood disorder such as depression or anxiety, and about 6 percent live with a serious mental illness that significantly impedes their ability to live and work.

Technology may not be able to erase the stigma of mental illness, but it can certainly erase many of the barriers to accessing care.

The Global Mobile Landscape includes 6.5 Billion Connections

Worldwide, 4G LTE achieved an annual growth rate higher than 400 percent at the end of March 2013, ending the quarter with more than 90 million connections — and that number grew by May 2013 to more than 100 million connections.

Today, there are 178 commercial LTE networks in 72 countries compared to about 74 commercial networks in 40 countries one year ago — that’s more than 100 newly launched LTE networks in 12 months.
