How Cable Operators in the U.S. Face Many Challenges in 2014

In the boom and bust cycles of the American pay-TV business, being the incumbent cable provider sets you up for the predictable subscriber losses.

We expect IPTV subscriber growth to continue, and satellite to remain flat. And while the nations largest cable operator is showing signs of renewed subscriber growth, it will not be enough to propel them out of negative territory.

The Global Pay-TV Market will Reach $270 Billion by 2017

Incumbent U.S. pay-TV service providers would rather forget 2013 — since it will be remembered as one more year where the major MSO cable operators collectively reported hundreds of thousands more video subscriber disconnects and service downgrades each and every quarter.

“Telco IPTV operators continue to enjoy strong growth in new subscribers and ARPU, showing that competitive providers with differentiated services can successfully steal share away from incumbent cable operators,” notes Jeff Heynen.

Study Predicts Ongoing U.S. Pay-TV Subscriber Declines

While the economy continues its uneven recovery, there are both positive and negative signs for the U.S. pay-TV business. Cord-cutting continues to be an issue, and had accelerated in Q3 2013, causing declines in cable to accelerate during the quarter.

As the numbers of cord-nevers that pass up on a pay-TV subscription grow, market penetration is expected to continue its decline and nearing 80 percent through 2017.

Opinion: In Defense of the American Pay-TV Bundle

pay-tv-economics

That Atlantic’s fantastic business blogger Derek Thompson laid out the best argument I’ve seen last February for why today’s great shows are a product of the economics of pay TV.

Cable networks benefit from the reliable, steady revenue stream that bundling affords them, and in turn, use those resources to try to make the better, more interesting TV shows that will make them a “must have” network.

How Multimedia Home Gateways will Advance Pay-TV Services

Global Pay-TV set top box (STB) shipments continue to grow, with demand expected to peak at 180 million units in 2016, according to new research from Futuresource Consulting.

Multimedia home gateways are increasingly a new weapon of choice for operators to stem subscriber churn, offering new services and more efficient delivery of video to secondary screens in the home and on the move,” says Carl Hibbert.

Digital Cable STB Revenue to Reach $20 Million in 2013

Worldwide digital cable set-top box (STB) unit shipments grew by 10% in 2012 and are expected to continue to increase modestly in 2013 with revenues of nearly $20 million. Satellite STBs continue to show strength as new providers launch in regions like Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Middle East/Africa. Those unit shipments reached nearly 109 million in 2012, up from about 100 million in 2011.

Demand for IP STBs continued solidly in 2012, MRG expects unit shipments to flatten out and even marginally decrease as the IPTV market matures in 2013 and 2014.
