Blu-ray Video Discs are Now Half of Entertainment Retail Revenue

Blu-ray now makes up half of video retail revenue for top titles in 1H

In a first half of 2013 that saw consumer spending on retail video disc purchases decline 4.7 percent, net studio revenue from new-release feature films shipped to the retail channel was down by 4.1 percent — that’s $1.59 billion compared to $1.66 billion in 2012.

That marks a change in fortune for the new-release segment of the market, which has generally shrunk more than catalog and non-feature segments during the almost decade-long decline from its 2004 peak.
